As mentioned in another of our conversations, I see political beliefs as a circle rather than a spectrum. The more to the right or left we go, the closer we are to our opponents. And then, of course, some of us are compassionate regardless of our politics.

Yes, I feel for Ms. Johnson and the thousands (tens of thousands? more?) serving long sentences for non-violent drug offenses.

Drug addiction and alcoholism are still demonized in this country, though. By some estimates, 80% of criminal charges are related to drugs and alcohol. Prison reform will be an uphill battle until the American public recognizes that addiction is a disease that, when untreated, can lead people into criminal activity.
