Hi Henry,

The original title of this essay is “When a Child Offends,” but the title was revised by the editors at Human Parts. I’ve written elsewhere about representing less sympathetic clients, though, and my guiding principle for representing all clients (mentioned in this current piece, too) was that I was helping to even up the odds. If a person is arrested, the entire machinery of law enforcement is marshaled against them. We’re all constitutionally entitled to a fair trial. Defense attorneys help to even out the power dynamics.
