My family has struggled against this cynical bootstraps argument for decades, suffering through mental illness, addiction, lack of education, lack of decent employment, incarceration, and family separation. I love my family, and in my own writing, the goal has always been to translate their experiences for a middle class audience, to spread the love. You’ve done that for the woman in the parking lot.
